tondos

I am currently focusing on abstract paintings executed in water media on round constructed panels. I have chosen the tondo format to reference symbols and signs with less reference to language than a rectangular or square format. I am interested in how a circle is a less literal and more symbolic, emotional way to directly present an image.

My painterly style has illusions of cavitation or weather occurring in a time and scale uncertain to the viewer. Color is a constant memory trigger for me. The discipline of my process demonstrates energy at fixed and variable speed, balancing and reconciling the contradiction of making work that is both peaceful and energetic. I control the medium with an image in mind while simultaneously submitting to the mercurial nature of my spontaneous actions. The finished surfaces are absolutely smooth and have innumerable layers, a proprietary technique that is an aesthetic equivalent of suspended animation.
