the disappearing act

The catalyst for my paintings that I call The Disappearing Act, was the onset of a vision problem and the Covid lock down. The paintings are loosely based on medical color-blind studies, eye charts and the psychology of color, often adopting a limitation of ten letters within a vertical format. Time slows down painting in the obsessive technique of building fields with hand-painted dots using subtle, adjacent and complimentary color combinations. Sand and other aggregates add interest to the painted surfaces.

The content of provocative and contemplative phrases from sources of various repute - ordinary, sublime, ridiculous, daily observations and insights refer to what I see disappearing both personally and globally. The words and colors speak to what we need to embrace, share and how differently we see from each other. I strive to combine painting skills with a conceptualist conceit and produce beautifully crafted objects that often play mind games with the viewer.
