why I make abstract pictures

I grew up drawing, content to be mostly silent, lost and found in my own world. Narrative aspects of my visual output became less important over time. Later, a writer I admired told me that great writing is narrative that shows the story rather than tells the story. I completely understood.

Abstract painting has provided me with a way of showing instead of telling. Eliminating narrative slows the viewers inspection and response. My pictures are sightings, insights — glimpses of visual learning translated back to the surface. In the process of converting experience, emotions and images into abstract, non-representational form, I am balancing and reconciling the contradiction of making work that is both peaceful and energetic. When I paint, I efficiently try to get to the point where no point exists. It is my way of speaking silently.
